Modi Vows Justice After Deadly Delhi Explosion Claims Eight Lives

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged that those responsible for a devastating explosion in Delhi that claimed at least eight lives “will not be spared.”

The blast occurred Monday evening when a vehicle detonated near the Red Fort, one of Delhi’s most prominent historical landmarks and tourist destinations. The explosion also left several others wounded.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the incident on Tuesday, Modi confirmed he was maintaining close contact with investigating agencies. He assured the public that authorities would “get to the bottom of this conspiracy.”

India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has assumed control of the case under anti-terrorism legislation, though police have not revealed their rationale for this designation.

Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level security briefing with senior officials on Tuesday, though no information has been released about the meeting’s contents.

Shah stated that multiple agencies were examining the explosion’s cause and “exploring all possibilities.” In a post on X, he announced he had directed officials “to hunt down each and every culprit behind this incident.”

Authorities have confirmed that at least six victims have been identified thus far.

Among the deceased was Lokesh Agrawal, a shopkeeper from Amroha in neighboring Uttar Pradesh state and father of three children. His younger brother, Sonu, told news agency ANI that Lokesh had traveled to Delhi to visit his son’s mother-in-law at a hospital. “He was near the Red Fort metro station when the blast took place,” Mr. Agrawal explained.

International leaders from Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Nepal have expressed their sympathies to India in the wake of the tragedy.

Security has been heightened in Mumbai, India’s commercial hub, as well as throughout Uttar Pradesh state, which shares a border with Delhi.

According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, the explosion occurred when a slow-moving vehicle came to a stop at a traffic light before detonating near a metro station adjacent to the Red Fort.

The historic monument has been closed for a three-day period as the investigation continues.
