Afghan National Charged with Sexual Assault and Immigration Violations

A 30-year-old Afghan man faces multiple charges including sexual assault and illegal entry into the United Kingdom.

Sohail Amiri, residing on Highfield Lane in Southampton, has been charged with three counts of sexual assault and one immigration offense. According to Hampshire Constabulary, the charges stem from incidents in the Portswood and Bevois areas of Southampton.

The Alleged Incidents

The most recent incident occurred early Tuesday morning on Upper Shaftesbury Avenue. Police report that shortly after midnight, a woman was walking along the street when she was approached by an unknown man who allegedly attempted to kiss her.

Two additional sexual assault charges relate to events on September 23. On that date, Amiri is accused of approaching two women on Westwood Road and making inappropriate comments toward them.

Immigration Charge

Beyond the assault allegations, Amiri faces charges of entering the UK without authorization, violating Section 24 of the Immigration Act 1971.

Court Appearance

Amiri was scheduled to appear before Southampton Magistrates Court on the morning following his charges.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson confirmed that officers had been investigating three separate reports of sexual assaults on women in the Portswood and Bevois neighborhoods before bringing charges against the suspect.

Local Context

The Highfield House Hotel in Southampton, reportedly used to accommodate asylum seekers, has been the site of several anti-immigration demonstrations in recent months.
