British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is considering a plan to eliminate visa fees for the world’s leading scientists, academics, and digital professionals, as reported by the Financial Times on Monday. This initiative comes as the United States adopts a stricter immigration policy, including a hefty $100,000 fee on certain tech-related visas.
Starmer’s “global talent task force” is actively developing proposals designed to lure top global talent to the UK, aiming to stimulate economic growth. According to sources familiar with discussions in Number 10 Downing Street and the Treasury, the plan may completely waive visa fees for individuals who have graduated from the world’s top five universities or have received notable international awards.

These policy considerations were underway before the Trump administration announced the significant increase in H-1B visa fees, which affect many tech company workers in the US. However, this US move has energized supporters of reform in the UK, providing momentum to enhance Britain’s visa system ahead of the budget announcement scheduled for November 26.
Currently, applying for a UK global talent visa costs £766 (approximately $1,030), with the same fee applicable to family members including partners and children. The proposed changes seek to make the UK a more attractive destination for elite talent worldwide.
