Sir Keir Starmer has committed to taking all necessary measures to safeguard Jewish communities in Britain, declaring that the nation must overcome the rising tide of antisemitism.

The prime minister’s statement came in response to a deadly assault at Heaton Park Synagogue in Crumpsall, north Manchester, which occurred on Thursday during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The attack claimed two lives and involved both a vehicle ramming and stabbing.
In his remarks, Sir Keir strongly denounced the perpetrator of what he described as a “horrific” incident, extending his sympathies to those affected and expressing gratitude to emergency personnel who responded.

According to Greater Manchester Police, four additional victims are receiving hospital treatment. The assailant, identified as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, was fatally shot by officers at the location.
Authorities have taken three individuals into custody on terrorism-related charges, including allegations of commissioning, preparing, and inciting terrorist acts. Those detained include two men in their thirties and a woman in her sixties.
Addressing the Jewish community directly in a video statement, the prime minister acknowledged their anxiety: “I know how much fear you will be holding inside of you. I really do… Nobody should have to do that. Nobody.”

He outlined specific security commitments, saying: “I promise you that I will do everything in my power to guarantee you the security that you deserve, starting with a more visible police presence, protecting your community.”
Sir Keir also sought to offer reassurance about British values, stating: “I promise you that over the coming days, you will see the other Britain, the Britain of compassion, of decency, of love.”
The prime minister referenced Britain’s historical role as a refuge for Jewish people while warning that “hatred against Jews is rising once again, and Britain must defeat it once again.”
