vActress Yami Gautam has opened up about criticism regarding her film choices, emphasizing that telling stories about unsung heroes through projects like Uri, Article 370, and Haq is something she’s genuinely proud of.
Yami Gautam, celebrated for her powerful performances in Uri: The Surgical Strike, Article 370, and her upcoming film Haq, has addressed ongoing discussions about her preference for patriotic cinema. During a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, the actress spoke openly about being labeled “nationalistic” and shared her perspective on embracing her Indian identity.
Responding to the characterization, Yami recalled, “Recently at a press conference, someone brought up how people view me as nationalistic because of my film choices. And I found myself wondering—since when did being patriotic become something negative? When did this become a crime? I actually think it’s wonderful. I’m Indian, I’m proud of my heritage, and if my work allows me to serve my audience and my films in this way, that’s meaningful to me.”

The actress clarified that while she’s attracted to stories reflecting India’s spirit, her primary commitment is to quality storytelling. “I can’t ask audiences to watch my films solely because the subject matter is important—the film itself must be compelling and well-crafted. If, within that framework, I have the chance to spotlight unsung heroes through films like URI, Article 370, or Haq, that’s my approach. That’s the lens through which I view these projects, and I’ll continue doing so.”
Regarding the negative connotations some attach to her work, Yami expressed confusion. “I’ve never understood why anyone would view this negatively. I don’t believe my body of work supports that interpretation. It feels strange that we’re even having to justify this. All I can say is that I’m proud, and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to tell these stories.”
Yami’s latest film Haq, co-starring Emraan Hashmi, continues her pattern of choosing socially and politically relevant dramas. The film releases tomorrow, November 7.
