Sushant Singh Rajput’s Family Challenges CBI Investigation, Plans Legal Action

The family of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput has criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation’s inquiry into his death, calling it insufficient and misleading. They plan to file a formal protest petition contesting the agency’s findings.

In a report submitted in March 2025, the CBI concluded there was no foul play in Rajput’s death. The investigation found no evidence supporting claims that Rhea Chakraborty contributed to the actor’s suicide or misused his funds. The agency noted that Rajput was alone at his Bandra residence from June 8 to June 14, 2020—when he was discovered deceased—and that neither Rhea nor her brother Showik had contact with him during those final days.

The actor’s family disputes these conclusions. According to Mid-Day, their legal representative, Advocate Varun Singh, strongly criticized the investigation’s thoroughness. “This appears to be superficial,” Singh stated. “A credible investigation requires comprehensive documentation—including digital communications, technical evidence, witness testimonies, and medical files. We intend to challenge this closure report, which we believe stems from inadequate investigative work.”

The CBI submitted two separate closure reports this year. The first addressed allegations filed by Rajput’s father, K.K. Singh, in Patna, which accused Rhea and her relatives of causing the actor’s death and financial irregularities. The second pertained to a case Rhea had filed in Mumbai against Rajput’s sisters.

According to the CBI’s assessment, Rajput’s financial affairs were properly managed by his chartered accountant and legal advisor. The agency determined that expenditures related to Rhea, including a 2019 European vacation, were legitimate personal choices made by the actor.

Singh challenged this reasoning, arguing that the CBI’s explanations lack necessary detail. “Simply stating that no unauthorized withdrawals occurred is inadequate. The agency must provide comprehensive banking records to support its position. This report lacks the substance required for judicial scrutiny,” he said.

The matter is scheduled for hearing in a Patna court on December 20, when the family will officially contest the CBI’s decision to close the case.
