Kap’s Cafe, owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma, was targeted by gunfire for the second time in less than a month early Thursday morning at its location on 85 Avenue and Scott Road in Surrey, British Columbia. The incident, which left at least six bullet holes and shattered windows, has heightened fears of escalating violence and extortion threats against South Asian businesses in the area, according to local media reports.
Surrey Police responded to the scene around 4:35 a.m. after reports of multiple gunshots. Local residents described being jolted awake by the gunfire. Bob Singh, a nearby resident, told CityNews 1130, “I heard shots fired, like five or six shots, and then the cops came.” Another resident, Michelle Gaucher, reported hearing eight gunshots, noting, “It was not fireworks,” and observed emergency vehicles cordoning off the area.
The motive for this second attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made. This incident follows a similar shooting in early July, shortly after the cafe’s opening, where bullets were fired while staff were inside, though no injuries occurred. Authorities have yet to determine a motive for either attack, but the incidents align with a reported rise in extortion-related crimes targeting South Asian businesses in Surrey.
The repeated targeting of Kap’s Cafe has raised alarm in the community, with residents and business owners expressing concern over the growing violence. Surrey Police’s Frontline Investigative Support team is leading the investigation and has urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact the SPS non-emergency line.
