On 26 October, just days after the last Diwali cracker fizzled out, Boney Kapoor quietly called “roll sound” on the sets of Mom 2 in Mumbai. By the time the first clap echoed, Khushi Kapoor—carrying forward the legacy of her late mother, Sridevi—was already deep in character, while Karishma Tanna slipped into a pivotal role alongside her. Roughly eleven days of shoot are already in the can and the pace shows no sign of slackening.
This time the director’s chair has a new occupant: Girish Kohli. Fans of the 2017 thriller will remember Kohli as the man who penned its story, screenplay and every razor-sharp line of dialogue. After watching Kohli steer Sohum Shah through this year’s sleeper-hit Crazxy, Kapoor decided the franchise could rest in no safer hands.
The plan, whispered across Bollywood’s corridors, is to unveil the project with fireworks of its own. November 11—Boney Kapoor’s birthday—is pencilled in for the grand announcement; an official invite could drop any day now.
The seed was planted back in March at the 25th IIFA Awards in Jaipur. On the green carpet Kapoor admitted he’d binge-watched every frame of Khushi’s young career—“The Archies, Loveyapa, Nadaniyaan”—and was determined to craft a vehicle worthy of her talent. “She’s walking in her mother’s footsteps,” he said. “Sridevi ruled every language she worked in; I hope Khushi and Janhvi reach that same pinnacle.”
While Mom 2 takes its first strides, Kapoor loyalists are keeping their fingers crossed for another sequel to wake from hibernation: No Entry 2, the long-gestating follow-up to the 2005 blockbuster. For now, though, all eyes are on Mumbai’s film city—and on Khushi Kapoor as she steps into the spotlight her mother once owned.
