Film producer Boney Kapoor has approached the Madras High Court seeking protection of a Chennai farmhouse that belonged to his late wife, legendary actress Sridevi. The petition alleges fraudulent ownership claims by three individuals over the valuable property located on East Coast Road.

The Property Dispute

The contested farmhouse was purchased by Sridevi on April 19, 1988, from M.C. Sambanda Mudaliar. The property had been legally divided among the Mudaliar family in 1960, with Sridevi acquiring her portion through a legitimate transaction.

However, three claimants—a woman and her two sons—have now come forward asserting legal rights to the property. The woman claims to be the second wife of one of Mudaliar’s sons, allegedly marrying him in 1975.

Questioning the Claims

Kapoor’s petition challenges the validity of this marriage claim, pointing out that the man’s first wife was alive until 1999, which would render any second marriage legally invalid under Indian law. This forms the crux of the fraud allegations in the case.

The petition also takes issue with the Tambaram Taluk Tahsildar’s decision to issue a legal heirship certificate to the three individuals. Kapoor is seeking the court’s intervention to cancel this certificate and prevent any transfer of property ownership.

Family Background

Boney Kapoor and Sridevi married in June 1996 and had two daughters together—Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor. The iconic actress passed away on February 24, 2018, while attending a family wedding in Dubai.

Both daughters have followed in their mother’s footsteps into Bollywood. Janhvi made her acting debut with “Dhadak” in 2018, while Khushi entered the industry with “The Archies” in 2023. The family continues to honor Sridevi’s memory, with both daughters frequently sharing fond recollections of their mother at public events.
