Onkar Singh earns near-perfect scores of 98/100 in Islamic Studies and 49/50 in Quran translation in Lahore board examinations

The young scholar achieved an outstanding overall score of 554 out of 555 marks in his 9th grade examinations, demonstrating that excellence transcends religious boundaries.

Rather than selecting alternative subjects typically offered to minority students, Onkar Singh chose to study Islamic Studies and Quranic translation through his private school. His decision to engage deeply with these subjects proved rewarding, as he earned 98 out of 100 marks in Islamic Studies and an impressive 49 out of 50 in Quranic translation.

The young student has set his sights on following his father’s professional path in medicine. His father, Dr. Mimpal Singh, has made significant contributions to Pakistan’s healthcare sector and was honored with the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2024 for his exceptional service.

Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat publicly commended Onkar’s achievement on his official social media account, simply stating “well done.” The minister also used this success story to highlight concerning trends in the broader educational system, noting the irony that while a non-Muslim student excelled in religious subjects, many Muslim students in government schools struggled with the same curriculum.

The announcement of the 9th grade results by the Lahore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) revealed significant challenges in the region’s education system. Of the 308,000 students who appeared for examinations, only 45% successfully passed, resulting in a concerning failure rate of 55%.

The statistics revealed notable disparities across different demographics:

  • Male students faced a 65% failure rate
  • Female students had a comparatively better 47% failure rate

Subject-Based Results:

  • Arts Group students experienced a 63% failure rate (79% for boys, 53% for girls)
  • Science Group students had a 53% failure rate (62% for boys, 44% for girls)

Institutional Divide:

  • Private schools achieved a 67% pass rate
  • Government schools saw 60% of their students fail, underscoring systemic challenges in public education

Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat addressed the disappointing overall results by emphasizing that they reflect genuine student performance following intensive efforts to eliminate examination malpractices across Punjab’s educational boards. “These results show the real performance of students after our crackdown on cheating networks,” the minister explained, indicating that previous years’ statistics may have been inflated due to widespread academic dishonesty.
