Russia Cautions US Amid Nuclear Tensions Following Trump’s Orders

In a chilling exchange of rhetoric, Russia has issued a stern warning to the United States following President Donald Trump’s directive to reposition U.S. nuclear submarines. This move, announced last week, was in response to what Trump characterized as “highly provocative” comments made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev regarding the potential for conflict between the two nuclear powers.

Trump’s order, which came on Friday, called for the strategic positioning of two submarines in designated regions. In the wake of these developments, the Kremlin has urged restraint, emphasizing the need for careful dialogue surrounding nuclear capabilities. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked, “Russia is very cautious about nuclear nonproliferation matters, and we believe everyone should be very careful about nuclear rhetoric.”

Adding to the tension, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement addressing the moratorium on deploying ground-based intermediate-range and short-range missiles. The U.S. formally withdrew from the INF Treaty in 2019, a critical arms control agreement that had been in place since 1987. The Kremlin now accuses the U.S. and its allies of establishing destabilizing missile systems in regions bordering Russia, claiming this poses a direct threat to national security.

The statement warned of the potential for significant negative repercussions on regional and global stability, highlighting the dangerous escalation of tensions between nuclear-armed nations. The Foreign Ministry declared that the conditions for maintaining a unilateral moratorium on similar weapons have dissipated, asserting that Russia no longer feels bound by previous self-imposed restrictions.

Despite the heightened rhetoric, Peskov attempted to downplay the implications of Trump’s orders, stating that there is no immediate escalation in nuclear tensions between the two nations. “It is clear that very complex, very sensitive issues are being discussed, which, of course, are perceived very emotionally by many people,” he noted.

Peskov also sought to distance President Putin from Medvedev’s comments, indicating a desire to avoid engaging in public disputes. He concluded with a stark reminder: “There can be no winner in a nuclear war.”
