Male: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday underlined the “centuries-old” friendship between India and the Maldives, calling it a cornerstone of India’s Neighbourhood First policy.
Speaking at an official banquet hosted by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi said, “India and the Maldives are neighbours, partners and true friends who stand together in times of need. The Maldives holds a special place in our foreign policy—this is not just diplomacy but a relationship of deep affinity.”
The visit marked a symbolic moment, coinciding with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day and the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic ties. “This happy coincidence makes my visit even more special,” he said, extending greetings on behalf of the Indian people.

PM Modi highlighted cultural and people-to-people ties, noting shared linguistic roots, culinary similarities and historic bonds. “The love between our people has remained strong for centuries. This year, your 10 lakhth tourist turned out to be an Indian,” he remarked.
President Muizzu, in turn, congratulated Modi for becoming India’s second-longest-serving Prime Minister, surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record of 4,078 consecutive days in office. “This milestone reflects your dedication to public service and the prosperity of the Indian people,” he said.
During the two-day visit, India and the Maldives signed multiple agreements to enhance cooperation in trade, agriculture, health and social welfare, aiming to accelerate the island nation’s development journey.
