The Maldives has long seen India as its first responder in times of crisis, with leaders like Abdulla Shahid and Mohamed Nasheed praising India’s generosity and support. Nasheed credited India with preventing an economic default, emphasizing the country’s consistent “India-first” foreign policy—despite occasional swings toward China during elections. Ties were strained after President Mohamed Muizzu’s 2023 election on an “India Out” platform, which included removing Indian military personnel and deepening relations with China.
