INDIA Bloc Slams Supreme Court Over Rahul Gandhi Remarks; Priyanka Says ‘Judges Can’t Decide Who Is a True Indian’

New Delhi, August 6, 2025:
The political temperature soared today as the INDIA bloc strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. During a hearing on a defamation case related to Gandhi’s 2022 comments on Chinese incursions, a bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih had questioned the veracity of his statements and said, “A true Indian would not say all this.”

In a sharp response, the opposition alliance called the observation “extraordinary and unwarranted,” asserting that questioning government actions is the duty of every opposition leader. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, coming out in strong defense of her brother, said:

“With due respect to the honourable judges, they do not decide who a true Indian is. It is the job of the Opposition leader to ask questions and challenge the government. My brother has the highest respect for our Army, and his words were misinterpreted.”

The Supreme Court had stayed the defamation proceedings against Rahul Gandhi but advised political leaders to raise sensitive national security issues in Parliament rather than on social media.

The BJP seized on the court’s remarks, calling them a warning to Rahul Gandhi over his “reckless” statements on border security. Congress leaders, however, accused the government of trying to silence dissent and misusing judicial observations for political gain.

With political fault lines deepening, the debate has now shifted beyond courtrooms into the larger question of who defines patriotism in India—politicians, courts, or the people.
