India Reaffirms Commitment to Peaceful Resolution as Modi and Zelensky Discuss Ukraine War

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held discussions on Monday regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution.

During the call, President Zelensky urged India to actively support Ukraine’s peace initiatives, stating that “it is important that India is supporting our peace efforts and shares the position that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine’s participation. Other formats will not deliver results.”

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s longstanding diplomatic stance on the conflict. “I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine,” Modi posted on X following the conversation.

The discussion comes at a time when India faces increased scrutiny from the United States over its continued purchase of Russian oil, which has resulted in higher tariffs being imposed on Indian goods. Despite international pressure, India has maintained its policy of strategic autonomy while calling for diplomatic solutions to the conflict.

Modi expressed satisfaction with the exchange, noting that he was “glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments.” The leaders also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between India and Ukraine beyond the immediate crisis.

The conversation underscores India’s delicate balancing act as it maintains relationships with both Russia and Ukraine while advocating for peace through dialogue and negotiation.
