Indian Chief Justice Targeted in Courtroom Shoe Attack Over Religious Comments.

A lawyer has been suspended after throwing a shoe at India’s Chief Justice BR Gavai during court proceedings in Delhi on Monday, in an incident that has raised serious concerns about judicial security.

Rakesh Kishore launched the attack in response to comments made by the chief justice regarding a Hindu deity, which the lawyer perceived as offensive to Hinduism.

Witnesses in the courtroom told the BBC that the shoe grazed both Chief Justice Gavai and a fellow justice before falling behind the bench. The incident represents both a grave breach of court security and a significant act of disrespect in Indian culture, where throwing a shoe is considered a serious insult.

As security personnel escorted him from the courtroom, Kishore was heard shouting that “India won’t tolerate insult to Sanatan Dharma”—a term referring to the eternal principles of Hinduism.

The lawyer has since been barred from practicing law following the unprecedented courtroom incident.
