Israeli forces have intensified military operations in Gaza City as part of ongoing efforts to combat Hamas, affecting nearly a million Palestinian residents in the area.

Current Military Situation
Residents report continuous explosions in northern and eastern sections of Gaza City. Israeli military forces have resumed operations in the Jabalia refugee camp area, with demolition activities targeting specific structures.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, 64 people were killed and nearly 300 injured in the past 24 hours. The ministry reports total casualties since the conflict began have reached 62,686 deaths and 157,951 injuries.
The military campaign began following the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 people taken hostage.
Military Response and Operations
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained his commitment to defeating Hamas despite international criticism of potential military expansion. Israel has called up 60,000 reservists for the operation.
Recent strikes have targeted the Zeitoun and Shejayia areas from the air, while ground forces have engaged the Sabra neighborhood. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that returning to previously cleared areas like Jabalia prevents Hamas from reestablishing operations there.

Hostage Situation and Diplomatic Efforts
Netanyahu faces domestic pressure, particularly from families of hostages seeking negotiated resolution. Of the 50 remaining hostages, only 20 are believed to still be alive.
Mediation efforts by Qatar and Egypt have proposed a 60-day ceasefire with the release of approximately half the remaining hostages. While Hamas has reportedly accepted this proposal, Israeli officials have stated they will only accept a comprehensive agreement ensuring all hostages’ release.
The defense minister has indicated that military operations in Gaza City will proceed unless Hamas agrees to disarm completely and release all remaining hostages.
Humanitarian Concerns
International organizations have warned of severe humanitarian consequences from expanded military operations in Gaza City. The UN reports that over 90% of homes have been damaged or destroyed, with critical infrastructure including healthcare, water, and sanitation systems severely compromised.
Currently, 18 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain partially operational – 11 in Gaza City and surrounding areas, and one in North Gaza.
Most significantly, famine conditions were officially confirmed in Gaza City and surrounding areas for the first time on Friday.
The Israeli military has announced plans to evacuate Gaza City’s entire population to southern shelters before major operations begin. Most of Gaza’s residents have already been displaced multiple times during the conflict.

Other Developments
The World Health Organization announced Sunday that one of its staff members, detained since July 21, has been released by Israeli forces. No additional details were provided regarding the circumstances of the detention or release.
