In a surprising revelation, singer Kanika Kapoor has claimed that many Indian singers, including some of the industry’s biggest names, are paid a meager Rs 101 for their songs. She made the comments during an interview on Uorfi Javed’s show, Bunkk with Uorfi.
Kapoor, known for chart-toppers like “Baby Doll,” painted a grim picture of the music industry’s financial landscape for artists. She stated that when singers sign contracts, they are often told that the opportunity itself is a “favour.”

“I can show you all the contracts, you get ₹101,” she said, highlighting what she views as a systemic failure.
Kapoor went on to allege that even the “greatest singer” in India is not paid for most of their hit songs and lacks any kind of royalty or publishing structure. She explained that a singer’s income is tied directly to live performances and shows. “As long as your voice is working and you’re able to perform shows, you’ll keep earning,” she said. However, she noted the lack of any “pension plan” for singers if they are no longer able to perform.

Kanika Kapoor’s own career took off a decade ago with the immense success of “Baby Doll,” and she has since delivered a string of hits, including “Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan,” “Desi Look,” and “Beat Pe Booty.” Her comments have shed light on the financial struggles and lack of long-term security faced by many in the Indian music industry.
